Why Summer Ain't as Good as It Used to Be

aka My Favorite Thing About Summer

**Excuse the horrible grammar, but when I think of summer, I feel like I shouldn’t have to watch my ps and qs when it comes to grammar.

Sometimes lately Hubby and I have seemed to be on different pages, but this weekend, standing in line at Bacon Fest both of us commented about how when you’re little time just stands still.  In the midst of this crowd of people, standing in the the blazing summer sun, waiting in line for a kiddie roller-coaster, kids behaving well, beers in our hands, full bellies all around and the smell of sunblock all around it was time that was on our minds!  That’s when I realized why summer ain’t as good as it used to be.

When I was a kid I can remember summer seeming to last forever.  Our family were big travelers and it always seemed as if we were always on the go, seeing new things and learning new things.  As a parent, I’m trying to do the same thing with my children, but now it seems like there isn’t enough time to do all that I want to get done.  The scheduling of these great adventures takes away a lot of the whimsy of being able to enjoy them.

The calendar breakdown

Looking at the 8 weeks between the end of one school year and the beginning of another makes the time seem so short.  Even with my trusty rusty mommy time management plan in place, the days fill up quickly.

When all else fails… Hug a clown! #clown #hug #purejoy

Our summer breaks down to:

  • 8 Mondays
    • $1 bowling days
    • Karate Practice
  • 8 Tuesdays
    • Story time at the library
    • Karate Practice
  • 8 Wednesdays
    • Possible trips to see great grandma
  • 8 Thursdays
    • Karate Practice
  • 8 Fridays
    • Rest day waiting for Hubby to get out of work

When you look at it like that, and add in seeing a clown, a karate tryout for Boogie, a birthday party for Bootsie, 4th of July,, trips to the lake on the weekends and a trip to the fair at least once, the time is too short!  And just think…I’m still trying to slow learning loss this summer and also had planned swim lessons somewhere in there too!

Last volunteering day of the school year. Can’t wait until next year! #kindergarten rocks!!!

In the 8th week I’ll be turning to back to school mode, planning out wardrobes and the like as we get ready not only for the kids to head back but for me to start my regularly scheduled volunteer hours.  Time is slipping by and August 8th is going to be here too soon.

Why summer ain’t as good as it used to be?

Straight shooting it?

Because it reminds you every moment that this free time of your life is just too dang short.

How are you spending your summer?  Are your bucket list plans for the summer happening or is it just a list that sits on your fridge or cork board mocking you?

    • We spend 99% of our weekends outdoors, but we live in such a hot area that unless you’re at the lake or in the pool it’s almost unbearable. It was 103 to 105 today so we were at karate lessons and were supposed to go bowling but that didn’t quite work out.

I loved the link party. I need to do more of them, it makes it easier for me to have a list of blogs to visit than just have a free for all to read.

Can’t wait for the next one!

  1. I love summer, but totally agree, it’s too darn short! I am an outdoors person and hate the cold so I wish summer was much longer! haha I love to plan things with the kids too, however, planning never seems to work out. Spur of the moment is much better for us and can actually be more fun.

    • I really try only to do one thing a week that takes special planning. That way if it doesn’t happen I don’t waste too much time on it, ya know? thanks for reading and leaving me a comment.
