Cleaning is always a concern as a mom, but so is my budget. I’m always looking for a multi-purpose cleaner, since my messes are in pretty much every room in the house. My biggest cleaning project is my kitchen counters. We have black counters and while it hides a lot sins, having it hide so many sins makes getting it clean a challenge.
I swear if I used a store bought cleaner instead of a multipurpose cleaner on my kitchen counters I’d go broke. After trial and error, though, I’ve landed with an extremely simple recipe that cleans well and doesn’t leave any residue on the counter tops.
A simple recipe:
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon of Dawn Ultra Dishwashing Liquid
- 4-5 drops of essential oils
Some people heat this mixture up to give it a little more power, but I’ve found that just mixing it in something like the Rubbermaid Professional Plus Heavy-Duty Spray Bottle does the trick. I like the professional bottle spray nozzles better than any other bottles.
How I use it?
This works great on pretty much any type of surface. It’s simple to use. Just spray this mixture on any dirty surface and wipe dry. For a little extra scrubbing power use something like Zwipes Microfiber Cleaning Cloths.
For things that are extra sticky, spray and leave for a few minutes. The Dawn Ultra Dishwashing Liquid works really well to “eat up” anything sticky you might come across. The longer you leave it on the surface the easier the wipe up process will be and you don’t have to worry about it eating up your hard surfaces with any harsh chemicals.
I do have to say though that while this will get rid of your every day sticky messes, you probably need to use something like Clorox Disinfecting Wipes for more serious bacterial messes that come along with cooking meats like chicken or pork. Clorox products are really great anti-bacterial products.

Later this week I’ll tell you how to use this same multi-purpose recipe to “shine your sink” the way that the FlyLady.net tells you to do in her cleaning process. Also I’ll do a product review on the Goplus Microfiber Spining Magic Spin Mop.
